What is how to autofit in excel?

Here's how to autofit columns and rows in Excel:

What is Autofitting?

Autofitting in Excel automatically adjusts the width of columns or the height of rows to display the content within them fully, without any truncation.

Methods to Autofit:

  • Double-Click: The simplest method. Hover your mouse over the right border of the column header (e.g., between A and B) or the bottom border of the row header (e.g., between 1 and 2). When the cursor changes to a double-headed arrow, double-click. This will autofit the column or row to the widest or tallest content within that column or row, respectively. This will be a double%20click action.

  • Autofit Column Width Menu Option:

    • Select the column(s) you want to autofit. You can select multiple adjacent columns by dragging across their headers, or non-adjacent columns by holding down the Ctrl key while clicking the headers.
    • Go to the Home tab on the Ribbon.
    • In the Cells group, click Format.
    • Under Cell Size, select Autofit Column Width. This process is a menu%20option.
  • Autofit Row Height Menu Option:

    • Select the row(s) you want to autofit. You can select multiple adjacent rows by dragging down their headers, or non-adjacent rows by holding down the Ctrl key while clicking the headers.
    • Go to the Home tab on the Ribbon.
    • In the Cells group, click Format.
    • Under Cell Size, select Autofit Row Height. This is for row%20height.
  • Autofit All Columns/Rows in a Worksheet: To quickly autofit all columns or rows in a worksheet, you can first select the entire worksheet by clicking the small triangle at the top-left corner (where the row and column headers meet). Then, use either the double-click method on any column or row header boundary, or the Format menu options described above. This covers the whole worksheet.

Considerations:

  • Autofit bases the new width/height on the displayed content. Hidden characters (like extra spaces at the end of a cell) might not be considered.
  • Formulas that return long strings will affect the autofit size.
  • Merged cells can impact autofitting, so adjust them separately if necessary. Merged cells require extra adjustment.
